Wonderful World

Spent the weekend of 6th and 7th June 2009 (World Environment Week) at IKEA in Warrington promoting the People and Wildlife concept for the Cheshire Widlife Trust. Despite being positioned at the end of a Cul-de-sac we attracted lots of family groups to stands over the course of the weekend. I had collected an array of pond creatures and various moths from my moth trap to show on the stand.

I also took along some Kestrel pellets which we dissected to show the bones of the field voles that the chicks had been eating at their nest-site in Runcorn. This was done as part of my job to promote the Cheshire and Wirral Bird Atlas.

Doing this kind of work is one of the most important things I do. Making people aware of the fantastic natural world all around them, opening their eyes to the possibilities. Proving that what we have on our doorstep is just as fascinating and valuable as a South American Rainforest or the Serengeti.

The big hit of the first day were the two spectacular Hawk-moths, which obligingly posed for pictures with mnay of the visitors. The second day highlight was the Great Diving Beetle larvae. Nobody handled that as it is one of the top predators in a pond and had already bitten me when I was setting up the stand!
